What Does a Town
Councillor Actually Do?
People often ask what town
councillors actually do, and
the honest answer is: a bit of
everything.
Yes, there are meetings. Quite
a few meetings, in fact. They
may not always be glamorous,
but they matter because they
are where decisions are
discussed, ideas are tested
and actions agreed. But being
a town councillor is about
much more than sitting
around a table. It is about
walking around our area,
speaking to residents,
listening to concerns and
looking at our town with fresh
eyes. Sometimes that means
spotting something small that
could be improved. Sometimes
it means asking bigger
questions about what our
community needs now and in
the future.
Town councillors are
volunteers. We have families,
jobs, responsibilities and busy
lives, just like everyone else.
We do this because we care
about our town and want to
play a part in making it better.
As a Town Council, our formal
remit covers the maintenance
of our parks and gardens, but
we always try to do more
where we can. That includes
supporting local events,
encouraging community
activity and working with
others to improve the places
people use every day.
At the moment, we are working
on a cross-party plan to better
support young people in our
area. We are also developing a
programme of improvements
across our parks, with the aim
of making them even more
welcoming, communityfocused spaces for everyone
to enjoy.
We know the best ideas often
come from the people who live
here, use the parks, attend
local events and care about
the future of the town. So
