HISTORY WITHIN MAGHULL
Now and Then
Written by Cllr Ross Ferguson
The change in use for some of our
town's buildings and facilities is
something that can go unnoticed for
years, and in some cases, decades.
These places and their former use
may come as a surprise to the people
who use them or pass them daily.
For instance, I have been coming to
Maghull since the 1970s and have
been a resident since 1981, but I was
very surprised recently, when looking
at an old photograph in a local history
book by the late Dr John K Rowlands,
titled 'Around Maghull and Lydiate',
that I recognised a building that I
have passed for many years.
The building sits on the corner of
Liverpool Rd North and Gordon Ave
and houses a Hair and Beauty Salon
and a Pharmacy/Chemist. In years
gone by, this building was the original
Coach and Horses pub!
The original pub closed in 1961 when
the new Coach and Horses pub, the
one we know today, was opened next
door to it, on the land formally known
as 'Woodland Mount'. Apparently,
some of the regulars of the old pub
couldn't wait to move to their new
pub next door, which was larger,
warmer and brighter.

Have a good look at the old
photograph, from about the 1930s,
with the lady standing outside the old
pub, next to a motorcycle and
sidecar. Then walk past the old
building in its present-day use, and
you can almost see that old
photograph.
The next time you are walking past
one of our older buildings, just ask
yourself, What was this place
originally used for, and like me, you
may be very surprised at what you
can find.
Try looking things up on a local
website called
'I Grew Up In Maghull' (IGUIM)
www.igrewupinmaghull.com or a very
interesting Facebook page called
'Maghull & Lydiate In Old Photos'.
